Can We Really "Do it all?"

We all strive to be more efficient. The current pace of society demands it. But are we really able to perform multiple tasks at once? The answer, unfortunately, is no. (I think I already knew this but it was confirmed by my psychology textbook reading yesterday). We are only able to fully focus our attention, and absorb the information, on one thing at a time. (if you want to geek out on some cool psych concepts, look up: selective attention, inattentional blindness, and change blindness)

I feel that the more we can accept and appreciate this function of our brain, the more truly efficient we will be. When you hang out with your friend, listen rather than check your phone. When you eat your lunch, be present instead of answering emails. And when you step on to your mat, take advantage of the opportunity to just be in the present moment; everything else can wait.

But remember that it is all a practice- do not judge yourself for wanting to get more done, just remember that the only things that can really get accomplished are those that get our full attention and intention.

Stay cool, stay sane & be present.
