To the Chronically (un)Insured:
“Raise your hand if you’ve experienced applying to the US health insurance system & are calling to check on the status of your application.”
“Ok, keep your hand up if you’ve stayed on hold for 15 minutes”
“25 minutes”
“45 minutes? Anyone for 45 minutes?”
“Over an hour?!”
I bet if we were all in a conference hall together right now, most of you would still have your hands in the air.
I’m not going to begin an endless rant over the American healthcare system. I’m going to bitch about the rich getting richer off fake big pharma pricing making biologics cost in the multiple thousands of dollars for a month’s dose. I won’t even spare a paragraph to the fact that there is so little guidance/advice/help offered to navigate this tangled web. -Sure glad they wasted our brains in high school teaching us abstract mathematical concepts, but didn’t think it prudent to offer even an after-school club prepping for the day we turn 26 and get kicked off their parents’ insurance into the abyss.
(If you cant already tell, I’m currently in a “pending” status of my state coverage renewal and running rapidly out of my medication on hand.)
All I’m going to say is: you MUST be your own advocate. You MUST wait on hold every day to keep the papers shuffling. And you MUST remember that you are not alone.
Stay “sane” and stay on top of it
Love, Stephanie
You’re not alone feeling this sense of betrayal and distrust in the Healthcare System. I have a coworker I found out is being charged $8K a month by his Doctor to his Insurance Company for his Allergy shots. It’s crazy.
